Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar recently opened up on his hilarious rivalry with legendary Australia captain Allan Border. Notably, the trophy for the Test series played between India and Australia is named after the two legendary cricketers. The silverware was christened ‘Border Gavaskar Trophy’ in 1996 ahead of the one-off Test between the sides in 1996.
With India and Australia all set to ignite their intense rivalry in the upcoming series, Gavaskar recalled his hilarious conversations with Border. The former batter revealed how the Australian legend keeps on pulling his leg about dismissing him in a Test every time he sees him.
“Well, because he’s (Border) got me out, that’s the problem. You see, he’s got me out. I never got a chance to bowl to him. If I got a chance to bowl to him and get him out it might have been different. But you know he’s a little, you know, things that you know, used to come in and do this and bowl. And can you imagine he got one ball to turn, and I played that down the wrong line, top edge and I was out,” Gavaskar told 7 Cricket.
Border has a total of four wickets against India and one of them is Gavaskar whom he dismissed during the 6th Test in Mumbai in November 1979.
“So you know, I am reminded of it every time I bump into him. He comes and says ‘Hello Bunny, how are you?’ What do I say to that?,” he added.
Allan Border broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record
Gavaskar retired as the highest run scorer in the history of Test cricket with 10, 122 runs to his name and was also the first player to score 10000 runs in the format. However, his record was broken by Allan Border in February 1993. The Australian captain retired with 11,174 runs from 156 matches which was later surpassed by Brian Lara.
Meanwhile, India and Australia will be seen locking horns in a five-match Test series beginning from November 22 in Perth. The series holds tremendous importance for both teams as it could decide their qualification to the World Test Championship (WTC) final 2025.
