Nahida Akter made history after becoming the first Bangladeshi bowler in Women’s T20Is to take 100 wickets. The left-arm spinner achieved the feat in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 match against Kathryn Bryce’s Scotland on Thursday, October 3 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
The youngster got the wicket of Katherine Fraser to reach the 100-wicket landmark. Nahida also joined Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman as one of the three Bangladeshi bowlers with 100 wickets in T20Is. In 88 T20Is thus far, the 24-year-old has taken 100 wickets at an economy rate of 5.71 with one four-wicket haul and two five-wicket hauls to show for her efforts.
Nahida became the 14th bowler to reach the landmark of 100 wickets in Women’s T20Is. The others are Nida Dar, Megan Schutt, Deepti Sharma, Sophie Ecclestone, Ellyse Perry, Anisa Mohammed, Shabnim Ismail, Nattaya Boochatham, Sophie Devine, Katherine Sciver-Brunt, Consylate Aweko, Henriette Ishimwe and Anya Shrubsole.
Bangladesh secure clinical victory
Bangladesh broke a significant 10-year drought in the Women’s T20 World Cup with a hard-fought 16-run victory over Scotland at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. This win marks their first since April 2014, when they last beat Ireland by 17 runs. During the years that followed, the Tigresses endured 16 consecutive losses across the 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2023 editions of the tournament.
Under the leadership of Nigar Sultana Joty, Bangladesh managed to secure their third-ever win in Women’s T20 World Cup history. The team put up a score of 119 for seven in challenging conditions, with Sobhana Mostary contributing a crucial 36 off 38 balls.
Scotland, though showing resilience, struggled in their chase, finishing at 103 for seven, with Bangladesh’s experience ultimately prevailing over Scotland’s inexperience. It was a milestone win for Bangladesh, and a learning moment for Scotland in their debut World Cup match.
