Australian skipper Alyssa Healy has been ruled out of the remainder of the Women’s Big Bash League 2024 due to a left knee injury. This injury raises concerns about her participation in the upcoming ODI series against India, which starts on December 5 at Brisbane’s Allan Border Field.
Healy, who had been nursing a foot injury sustained during the T20 World Cup in October, had seen limited action in the WBBL season. After managing her workload, the knee injury has now forced her to exit the tournament. The Sydney Sixers confirmed the news on Saturday, naming teenager Frankie Nicklin as her replacement for the rest of the competition. Healy’s absence is a significant blow to the Sixers, who are currently sixth on the WBBL points table with three wins in seven matches.
The Sixers are also set to lose England spinner Sophie Ecclestone, who will return home for international duties ahead of England’s multi-format series against South Africa in December.
Healy’s unavailability could also impact Australia’s ODI plans. The three-match series against India includes games on December 5 and 8 in Brisbane, followed by the final match at Perth’s WACA on December 11. If Healy is ruled out, vice-captain Tahlia McGrath is expected to step in as the stand-in captain.

Healy doubtful for India series
Healy’s absence leaves a void in both her leadership and wicketkeeping roles, which could add pressure on the Sixers and the Australian team. Despite her injuries, Healy has been a vital part of the Sixers this season, taking two outfield catches during their recent match against Brisbane Heat. Her absence further shows the challenges faced by the Sixers as they aim to stay competitive in the WBBL.
Australia will closely monitor Healy’s recovery, hoping she regains full fitness before the ODI series against India, a crucial part of their preparation for upcoming international fixtures.
