Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa believes India should test Ramandeep Singh at number 8 to address the team’s lower-order batting struggles, an area that contributed to India’s defeat in the second T20I against South Africa in Gqeberha. Though India’s batting has remained largely reliable throughout their recent winning streak, Uthappa pointed out that depth down the order could be vital for India, particularly after their lineup faltered on Sunday. Speaking to Jio Cinema, Uthappa suggested that India give Ramandeep Singh his debut in the third T20I on November 13, a timely opportunity for the young all-rounder who received his maiden India call-up for this series.
After being sent in to bat first, India managed to post only 124 for six, with key players like Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma failing to make significant contributions. The typically dependable middle order was unable to stabilize the innings, and India’s lower-order depth was noticeably lacking, ending their 11-game winning streak. As Uthappa noted, an all-rounder who can finish strong with the bat while providing a bowling option could have helped stabilize India’s performance under challenging conditions. Ramandeep Singh, with his skills as a finisher and a bowler, might just be the answer.
“You need an all-rounder there (at number 8) is what I feel. You need someone who can bat and bowl. Whether that is a spinner or a fast bowler, other than Hardik Pandya I mean. It t is what can fill that gap. Right now they don’t have any, but they have Ramadeep on the wings, which is why I am saying – bring him on to play,” Uthappa said.
Ramandeep had been on the selectors’ radar for his consistent performances in both the IPL and domestic cricket, particularly as part of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) 2024 title-winning team. Known for his explosive lower-order batting and his utility with the ball, the 29-year-old delivered in pressure moments for KKR, and his impactful performances also extended to India A’s successful Emerging Asia Cup campaign. These achievements have highlighted him as a promising all-rounder and led to his first senior team call-up.
It remains to be seen if India’s team management, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, will bring Ramandeep into the playing XI for the upcoming match. If given the chance, Ramandeep could add versatility to India’s lower order, balancing the batting lineup while enhancing the bowling attack’s flexibility.
