ENG vs AUS: Josh Inglis faces fans’ ire for claiming grounded catch during 4th ODI

Australia wicketkeeper Josh Inglis faced a massive backlash on social media after he claimed a grounded catch during the fourth ODI against England at Lord’s, London on Friday, September 27. The incident took place in the 17th over of the first innings after Australia captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and elected to bowl first.

On the fifth ball of the over bowled by Mitchell Starc, Harry Brook ended up getting some bat on the ball going down the leg side. Inglis dived to his left to complete the catch and began celebrating with his teammates. Seeing the Australian wicketkeeper claiming the catch with full conviction, umpire Joel Wilson immediately raised his finger to signal out. However, both on-field umpires decided to refer to the third umpire to check if it was a fair catch.

The Australian wicketkeeper also faced widespread criticism on social media as people questioned his spirit of the game. Notably, earlier at Lord’s another Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey also stirred up controversy during the second Test of the Ashes 2023 as he stumped Jonny Bairstow.

Carey hit the stumps after collecting the delivery from Cameron Green seeing Bairstow leave his crease. Australian captain Pat Cummins appealed for a dismissal and third umpire adjudged Bairstow out as the ball was still in play. The incident sent shockwaves through the entire cricketing fraternity as a few Australian players were also confronted by the MCC members in the long room while heading back to their dressing room during the lunch break. The incident added spice to the series as England managed to make a comeback after being 0-2 down to level the series 2-2.
