On Apple’s iPhones, Globalstar Inc. offers emergency SOS services. Apple added satellite-based SOS services to the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 15, and iPhone 15 Pro in 2023. These services are powered by Globalstar’s LEO satellite network. In the event of an emergency and when there is no cell or Wi-Fi connectivity, this enables customers to obtain emergency SOS services by satellite.

The newest US satellite company seeking to enter India’s budding market is Apple’s partner for satcom services, Globalstar, which is eager to create a wholly-owned subsidiary there.

In addition to proposing to apply for a GMPCS (global mobile personal communications by satellite services) authorization, the low earth orbit (LEO) global satellite systems operator stated in its submission to the telecom regulator dated July 31 that it plans to establish a land earth station gateway in India.

The single-largest market that Globalstar has so far been unable to penetrate is India.The company stated in its submission, “We anticipate that the issuance of a new satellite earth station gateway license would not impose any additional or burdensome restrictions upon a GMPCS approved entity.
