The world’s first high-altitude Para Sports Centre is set to be established in Leh, Ladakh, with a focus on training para-athletes for international competitions, including the 2028 Paralympics. This landmark initiative, a collaboration between the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, and the Aditya Mehta Foundation (AMF), aims to provide world-class facilities and specialised training in a unique high-altitude environment. The centre will serve both Indian and international athletes, offering them a competitive edge through altitude training, which is known to enhance strength, endurance, and resilience.
The establishment of this centre is part of a broader vision to elevate India’s position in international para-sports, following the country’s impressive performance at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, where Indian athletes won 29 medals, including seven golds. The centre will allow para-athletes from Ladakh, and beyond, to train with global champions, enhancing their skills and confidence for global platforms.
While the centre is under development, the AMF will provide interim training and rehabilitation support for potential para-athletes from Ladakh at its Infinity Parasports Academy in Hyderabad. With over 20 sports disciplines—including archery, athletics, badminton, cycling, wheelchair basketball, and para-winter sports—this centre aims to nurture and develop top-tier para-athletes for the 2028 Paralympic Games and beyond.
