Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel and Yash Dayal have been released from the Indian Test squad for the upcoming Irani Cup 2024. Mumbai and Rest of India will lock horns in the first-class game to be held from Tuesday, October 1 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow.
Earlier, Sarfaraz was picked to play for Mumbai while Jurel and Dayal were named in the ROI squad. But their selection was subject to not being picked in India’s second Test against Najmul Hossain Shanto’s Bangladesh at the Green Park in Kanpur.
Dayal earned his maiden India call-up for the Test series, but he didn’t get to play. Jurel had to warm the benches as Rishabh Pant returned to the purest format after 19 months. Sarfaraz, on the other hand, made his Test debut earlier this year against England, but failed to break into the playing XI against the Tigers.
Ruturaj Gaikwad will lead ROI while Ajinkya Rahane, who recently played for Leicestershire in the County Championship, will take charge of Mumbai.
India, in the meantime, are still in with a chance to beat Bangladesh in Kanpur. At Stumps on Day 4, the Tigers were trailing by 26 runs with eight wickets left in their second innings. After India took a lead of 52 runs in the first innings, R Ashwin finished off India’s day with the wickets of Zakir Hasan and Hasan Mahmud.
