Litton Das has been appointed as Bangladesh’s captain for the upcoming three-match T20I series against the West Indies, marking the first time he will lead the side for an entire series. Litton previously stepped in as captain for a one-off match against New Zealand in April 2021.
Several players like batting allrounder Shamim Hossain, who last played an international match in December 2023, have returned to the Bangladesh T20I squad. At 24, Shamim has shown glimpses of promise in his 14 T20I innings, amassing 254 runs with a strike rate of 115.98 and a solitary half-century.
A notable selection is Ripon Mondol, the 21-year-old medium-fast bowler, who impressed with his performances at the Asian Games in October 2023, where he picked up four wickets in three matches, helping Bangladesh secure a bronze medal.
The squad will also feature left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed, fast bowler Hasan Mahmud, and batters Soumya Sarkar and Afif Hossain. Soumya, in particular, is riding high on his recent success, having played a pivotal role in Rangpur Riders’ Global Super League title victory.
Regular all-format captain Najmul Hossain Shanto remains unavailable as he recovers from a hamstring injury sustained during the Afghanistan series in November. His return to leadership remains uncertain, especially given his inconsistent T20I form.
Meanwhile, seasoned allrounder Shakib Al Hasan’s future in international cricket remains unclear, with no official updates on his availability. Mahmudullah has retired from T20Is, while Towhid Hridoy, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, and Rakibul Hasan are also absent from the squad.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who captained Bangladesh in the Test series and is leading the ongoing ODI series in the Caribbean, was overlooked for the T20I captaincy. Despite his recent leadership stints, Mehidy is not considered a regular in T20Is, influencing the decision.
