Rafael Nadal is all set to finish his career in professional tennis after playing in the Davis Cup Finals. The Spaniard will be seen in action when Spain lock horns with the Netherlands in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, November 19 at the Palacio Deportes Martin Carpena in Malaga.
After bowing out of the Paris Olympics, Nadal hasn’t played any competitive tennis. He also did not take part in the US Open, after which he announced his decision to pull the curtains down on his illustrious career following the Davis Cup finals.
The 38-year-old Nadal is the part of the team that includes his successor, Carlos Alcaraz, Roberto Bautista Agut, Pedro Martinez, Marcel Granollers, and non-playing captain David Ferrer, a former World No.3 and French Open finalist in 2013.
The winner of the clash between the Netherlands and Spain will face the winner of the clash between Germany and Canada in the semi-final.
Nadal, in the meantime, is focussed on helping Spain win the clash against the Dutch rather than the limelight solely being on him due to his retirement. Nadal also said that he was unsure of playing in singles due to not having enough match practice this year.
“If I’m on the court I hope to control my emotions. I’m not here to retire. I’m here to help the team win. It’s my last week in a team competition and the most important thing is to help the team. The emotions will come at the end. Before and after, I’ll be focused on what I have to do,” Nadal told the reporters on Monday.
Nadal has won 92 titles in his career, spanning 22 years, out of which 22 were Grand Slam titles. In fact, he once held the record for winning most majors in men’s tennis before Serbian legend Novak Djokovic toppled him.
