Former Real Madrid midfielder Guti Hernandez has suggested that the club should consider re-signing their former captain and center-back, Sergio Ramos, to help bolster their backline amid a mounting injury crisis. The proposal comes after a major setback for Real Madrid, with Eder Militao ruled out for the rest of the season due to a torn ACL sustained in their recent 4-0 victory over Osasuna. The injury leaves coach Carlo Ancelotti grappling with limited options in defense, as Militao’s absence further weakens a backline already affected by injuries.
Real Madrid’s defensive concerns are compounded by the fact that David Alaba, another first-team center-back, has yet to return to full fitness following his own ACL injury last season. This situation has led Guti to advocate for Ramos’ return as an experienced and reliable option to shore up the defence. Ramos, who is currently a free agent, last played with Sevilla but has struggled with limited game time since. Nonetheless, his leadership and experience, particularly with Real Madrid, where he won multiple league and Champions League titles, could provide crucial support for the squad at this stage.
“Look at Ancelotti’s worried face. Militao is a very important player who had just recovered from last year’s injury, who was getting back to his best and who is leaving Madrid’s defence in a tight spot. He is joined by Carvajal’s injury. Alaba has had a very long injury,” Guti said.
“You have to go out on the market. Sergio Ramos is without a team. Right back and centre back. In this situation, I clearly see him, at zero cost. He comes from playing last year in Sevilla and doing well. A man who has been in the team, who was active last year. Who continues to take care of himself and who can offer those six months,” Guti said
Ramos’ return could be challenging, however, as Ancelotti has voiced his intention to look towards Real Madrid’s youth academy to bridge the gap until the January transfer window opens. This approach could give young players an opportunity to step up, allowing Ancelotti to assess his options internally before the club considers dipping into the transfer market or making a bold move for a free agent like Ramos.
Although the idea of Ramos returning to the Santiago Bernabeu is compelling, logistical and performance factors may weigh against it. His recent injuries and limited appearances with Sevilla might hinder his impact on the pitch. Still, Guti’s call highlights the depth of the defensive crisis and Real Madrid’s pressing need for reinforcements to maintain their momentum in La Liga and Europe.
