Who is Omkar Salvi? RCB appoint new bowling coach ahead of IPL 2025

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has named Omkar Salvi as their new bowling coach for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Earlier this year, Salvi served as the assistant bowling coach for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who won the IPL title after beating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Salvi was also the bowling coach of the Mumbai team that won the Ranji Trophy and the Irani Cup. He has won eight trophies in the last eight months and will now look to extend his streak with the Challengers in the IPL. Salvi will join RCB after fulfilling his duties in India’s domestic cricket.

Interestingly, Omkar is the brother of former Indian pacer Avishkar Salvi, who is currently the bowling coach of the Indian women’s team and was the head coach of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy-winning Punjab team.

Salvi was named as the head coach of the Mumbai domestic team before the 2023-24 season. Under his tenure, Mumbai ended their eight-year wait to win the Ranji Trophy. In the final, they defeated Vidarbha by 102 runs and recorded their 42nd title in the history of the first-class tournament.

Before the Ranji final between Mumbai and Vidarbha, Ajinkya Rahane backed domestic coaches like Salvi to take charge in Indian cricket.

“It is really good to have a coach like Omkar (Salvi) with us. It shows that you don’t need high-profile or flashy coaches to be around the team. You can still be under the radar. You can still stay low-profile and get the best out of each and every player, Rahane had said.

Salvi has a massive task in hand as RCB are yet to get their hands on the IPL trophy despite playing in every season since 2008. Last year, the advanced to the playoffs, but could not go beyond the Eliminator.
